It should be always replaced when the system has been activated (inflated body protector)
The body protector comes with a wrench which helps to change the cartridge quickly.
The cartridge can last indefinitely, but as a precaution it could be changed every year, and it has also to be replaced at the first sign of oxidation or surface damage.
